Catupiry is a super popular brand of creamy cheese spread from Brazil. It was first made way back in 1911 by an Italian immigrant named Mario Silvestrini. He lived in a Brazilian state called Minas Gerais. The name "Catupiry" comes from an old language called Tupi, and it means "excellent" – which is a great name for something so tasty!

What is Catupiry?

Catupiry is a soft, mild-tasting cheese that's easy to spread. You can put it on toast, crackers, or bread rolls. It's also a secret ingredient in many Brazilian dishes! Because it's not very sour, Catupiry adds a special creamy touch to lots of different foods.

How is Catupiry Used?

When you hear "com catupiry" (which means "with catupiry" in Portuguese), it usually means a food has this delicious cheese inside or on top. Imagine a pizza with creamy Catupiry, or a yummy coxinha (a popular Brazilian snack) filled with it! It's also often found in pães-de-queijo, which are Brazilian cheese breads.

Where is Catupiry Made?

Today, Catupiry has four factories where they make all their cheese. Two of these factories are in the state of São Paulo, in cities called Bebedouro and Santa Fé do Sul. The other two are in Doverlândia, in Goiás, and Santa Vitória, back in Minas Gerais.

Who Owns Catupiry Now?

The company is still run by the Silvestrini family! Six different families, all related to the original founder, manage the business. Catupiry is a very successful company, making a lot of money each year. You can even find Catupiry in other countries, like the United States, Canada, and Japan!
