Cauci facts for kids
The Cauci were an ancient group of people who lived in Ireland a very long time ago. We know about them mostly from a book called Geography, written by a famous ancient Greek scholar named Ptolemy in the 100s AD. He said they lived in the area that is now County Dublin and County Wicklow.

Who Were the Cauci?
Historians and language experts have wondered for a long time about the Cauci. They are only mentioned in Ptolemy's ancient map of Ireland. This makes them a bit of a mystery!
Connecting the Cauci to Other Groups
Since the 1800s, some experts have thought the Irish Cauci might be connected to another group called the Chauci. The Chauci were a Germanic tribe living in what is now the Netherlands and north-western Germany.
Similar Names, Similar People?
One reason for this idea is that their names sound very similar. Also, Ptolemy's map shows another Irish group, the Manapii, living near the Cauci. Their name is almost the same as the Menapii, a tribe from ancient Gaul (modern France and Belgium).
These similar names suggest that people might have moved between Ireland and mainland Europe a long time ago. It's like finding people with the same last name in different countries today!
Other Possible Connections
Some scholars also looked at ancient Celtic groups in the Iberian peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal). They found a leader named Kaukainos and a city called Kauka. This city was home to people called Kaukaioi. These names also sound similar to Cauci.
However, not everyone agrees with these connections. It's a topic that historians and linguists still discuss and research today.
