This is Dumbarton Rock, an important fort in ancient Scotland. King Caw ruled from a castle here!

King Caw was a legendary king who lived a long time ago, around 495 to 501 AD. He ruled a kingdom called Strathclyde in what is now Scotland. Not much is known for sure about him, so he's often called a "semi-legendary" figure.

He lived during a very old time in British history, after the Roman Empire left Britain. His main castle was at a place called Alt Clut, which is now known as Dumbarton Rock. Some old stories even say he fought against the famous King Arthur!

King Caw became king in 495 AD by taking power from another king named Tutagual. But he only ruled for about six years. It was a very busy and difficult time because the Anglo-Saxon people were invading parts of England. After losing his power, King Caw went to live in Wales.

Who Was King Caw?

King Caw was a ruler from a very old kingdom in Scotland called Strathclyde. This kingdom was in the southern part of modern-day Scotland. He lived during a time when Britain was changing a lot, after the Romans had left. This period is sometimes called the "Dark Ages" because we don't have many written records from it.

His main base was a strong fort called Alt Clut. This place was very important for many centuries. It was a natural stronghold, a big rock that was easy to defend.

A Turbulent Time

King Caw's time as king was very short, lasting only six years. This shows how difficult and unstable things were back then. Many different groups of people were fighting for control of the land.

The Anglo-Saxon invasion was a big event happening at the same time. These invaders were coming from parts of Europe and settling in what is now England. This caused a lot of changes and conflicts across Britain. King Caw's story is part of this exciting and challenging period in history.

King Caw's Family

King Caw is said to have had many children. Some of them became very important figures, even saints! One of his most famous children was a writer named Gildas.

Gildas wrote about the history of Britain during his time. Interestingly, some people think that Gildas didn't write very kindly about King Arthur or another king named Constantine. This might be because of his father, King Caw, and any conflicts he had with these other rulers.
