History of Cawood
The first post office in Cawood opened in 1890. It was started by a man named Wilson S. Hensley. He named the place Cawood after one of his ancestors, Berry Cawood. Berry Cawood was a brave hero during the American Revolutionary War.

Cawood is found in the southern part of Harlan County, Kentucky. It sits in a valley where Crummies Creek meets Martins Fork. Martins Fork is a branch of the Cumberland River.
A major road, U.S. Route 421, runs along the southern edge of Cawood. This road can take you about 9 miles (14 km) northwest to Harlan. Harlan is the main town and county seat of Harlan County. If you go southeast on the same road, you can reach Pennington Gap, Virginia, which is about 14 miles (23 km) away.
