Cayos Bequevé (also called Cayo Bequevé or Bequevé) is a beautiful group of islands in Venezuela. These islands are located in the southeast part of the Caribbean Sea. They are a special part of the Los Roques Archipelago, which is a big national park.
Cayos Bequevé is also part of the Lesser Antilles, a chain of islands in the Caribbean. The Venezuelan government manages these islands as part of its Federal Dependencies. It's important not to confuse these islands with an inn that has the same name on the island of Gran Roque!
Where are the Bequevé Islands?
These islands are found in the southwest part of the Los Roques National Park. You can get to them by boat, just like many other islands in the area. Boats usually leave from the dock at Gran Roque.
Cayos Bequevé is a coral island. It sits right in front of and south of Cayo de Agua. It's also northwest of Dos Mosquises and southwest of Cayo Carenero. You can find it on the far western side of the Los Roques islands.
How Many Islands Are There?
Even though the name "Cayos Bequevé" sounds like it's just one island, it's actually two! They are called Cayo Bequevé North (Norte) and Cayo Bequevé South (Sur). That's why they are often known as the Bequevé Islands or Cayos Bequevé.
- Cayo Bequevé Norte is the larger island. It covers about 34 hectares (or 0.341 square kilometers). It is also about 4.3 kilometers long.
- Cayo Bequevé Sur is much smaller. It's about 15.13 hectares (or 0.1513 square kilometers) and 1.76 kilometers long.
Together, both islands add up to about 49.23 hectares, which is 0.49 square kilometers. To give you an idea of their size, they are similar in area to Vatican City, which is about 44 hectares!
Fun Things to Do
Cayo Bequevé is a very popular spot in the Los Roques Archipelago. People love it because of its stunning white sandy beaches and quiet, peaceful shores. You can also spot many different kinds of birds flying around.
One of the coolest things about this area is that it forms a small natural swimming pool with other nearby islands. There are also freshwater wells on the islands. Many visitors enjoy diving in the clear waters around Cayos Bequevé.
