Cañete, Cayucupil and the river

Cayucupil is a valley, a small river (called a riachuelo), and a small community (hamlet) located near the city of Cañete, Chile. This area is part of the Arauco Province in the Bío Bío Region of Chile.

The Cayucupil River starts in the western foothills of the Nahuelbuta Mountains. It flows southwest through hilly and mountainous land, then turns west through flatter ground. It eventually joins the Tucapel River about five kilometers southwest of where the original city of Cañete was located. There's also a mountain pass in the upper part of the valley that goes through the mountain range.

What Does Cayucupil Mean?

The name Cayucupil comes from the Mapudungun language, which is spoken by the Mapuche people. The word cayu means "six," and quypil means "frame of a house."

In ancient times, Cayucupil was an important place for the Moluche people, who are a group of Mapuche. It was known as a rehue, which was a traditional Mapuche territory or community unit. This rehue was part of a larger area called the Tucapel aillarehue, which was a group of several rehues working together.
