Cecile Hulse Matschat was born in 1895. She grew up in upstate New York. As a young person, she studied art at the Pratt Institute.
Her love for nature started early. She began studying beautiful orchids in swamps near her home in New York and New Jersey. She even traveled far to explore places like the Everglades, the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico. She collected these orchids to paint them.
Cecile Matschat wrote 16 books during her career. One of her most famous books was Suwanee River: Strange Green Land. This book was part of the Rivers of America Series. It gave a special look into the lives and history of people living in the Okefenokee Swamp.
For her work, she won a Literary Guild award. She also became a member of The Explorers Club, which is a group for people who explore the world. From 1937 to 1966, Matschat was also a member of the Society of Woman Geographers.
Cecile Matschat passed away on March 4, 1976, in New York City.
