History of Cecilia Church
Building the Church
The Cecilia Church was built between 1880 and 1881. It was originally meant to be the church for the Vilhelmsro Nursing Home. A nursing home is a place where people who need special care can live.
Who Was Cecilia?
The church got its name from a person named Cecilia Willerding. She was a close friend of Ebba Ramsay when they were young.
Opening the Church
The church officially opened its doors in 1903. Herman Lindström, who was the bishop of Växjö, led the opening ceremony.
Changing Ownership
Over the years, the Cecilia Church has had a few different owners.
- First, it was looked after by the Vicar of Jönköping. A vicar is a type of priest in charge of a church area.
- In 1963, the church was renovated, meaning it was repaired and updated.
- Later, the Jönköping County Council took over its care. A county council is a local government group.
- After that, it was given to Vätterhem. This is a public housing company in the area.
- Vätterhem sometimes rents out the church for special events. These events include worship services and weddings.
New Beginnings
In 2014, the Romanian Orthodox Church of Sweden bought the Cecilia Church. This means it is now used by the Romanian Orthodox community in Sweden.
