Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck (born March 14, 1879, died October 29, 1969) was a famous Romanian painter. She had a big impact on the art world between the two World Wars. Cecilia was also a strong supporter of feminism, which means she worked for equal rights for women. She helped start important groups like the "Association of women painters and sculptors" and the "Feminin artistic circle." These groups helped women artists show their work and gain recognition.
Her Early Life and Education
Cecilia Cuțescu was born in a small village called Râul Vadului, in Vâlcea County, Romania. Her maternal grandparents adopted her, and she took their last name, Cuțescu. Even so, she stayed very close to her parents and her sisters. One of her sisters, Ortansa, also became an important activist for women's rights in Romania.
Cecilia finished school at the Central School for Girls in Bucharest. After that, she continued her art studies in 1897 at Damenakademie in Munich, Germany. In 1899, she moved to Paris, France, to take classes at Académie Julian, a famous art school. People first saw her paintings in art shows held in both France and Romania.
Awards and Recognition
Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck received many important awards for her art. These awards show how talented and respected she was:
- 1929: She won a gold medal and the Grand Prize at the International Exhibition in Barcelona, Spain.
- 1930: She was made a Knight of the Order of Civil Merit in Spain.
- 1933: She became a Knight of the Legion of Honor in France, which is a very high award.
- 1937: She received another gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris, France.
- 1957: She was named "Maestru Emerit al artei" (Emeritus Master of Art) for her entire artistic career.
Her Books
Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck also wrote some books about her life and art:
- Fresca unei vieți (The Fresco of a Life), published in 1943.
- O viață dăruită artei (A Life Dedicated to Art), published in 1966.
Her Legacy
In June 2010, a special plaque was placed in her birth village, Râul Vadului. This was done to remember her and her contributions.
Today, you can visit the Frederic and Cecilia Cuțescu-Storck Art Museum in Bucharest, Romania. This museum is dedicated to Cecilia and her husband, Frederic Storck, who was also a famous artist. It shows many of their artworks and helps people learn about their lives.
