Cecily G. and the Nine Monkeys is a fun children's story from 1939. It was written and illustrated by H. A. Rey, an author from Germany and America. This book is super important because it's the very first time the famous character Curious George appeared! When the story first came out in France, the main giraffe character was called Rafi. Later, in the United Kingdom, her name was Raffy. But when the book came to the United States, she was renamed Cecily.

What is Cecily G. About?
This story follows the adventures of a kind giraffe named Cecily G. She feels very sad because her animal friends and family are gone. They were all taken away and put into a zoo.
Meet the Monkeys
In another part of the jungle, there lived a monkey family. There was Mother Pamplemoose and her eight young monkeys. Sadly, their home was destroyed. Woodcutters had cut down all the trees in their forest. This is where we first meet Curious George, one of the young monkeys. He tells his family it's time to pack up and find a new home.
A Big Problem and a Clever Solution
The monkeys travel for a while, but then they face a big problem. They come to a very deep ravine (a deep, narrow valley). They can't cross it! Then, Jinny, the youngest monkey, spots someone on the other side. It's Cecily G., looking sad. Cecily G. sees the monkeys too and stops crying right away. She asks if they want to cross. To help them, Cecily G. stretches her long body across the ravine. She makes a living bridge for them!
Curious George is the first one to bravely cross over. He introduces his family to Cecily G., their new friend. When they all share their sad stories, Cecily invites the monkeys to live with her.
A Fiery Challenge
The most exciting part of the story happens when a fire breaks out! Cecily lives in a tall, giraffe-shaped house. The fire starts on the upper floors. The monkeys and Cecily work together like a team. Two strong monkeys pump water from an emergency pump. The other six monkeys guide the hose up Cecily's long neck. Her height helps them reach the fire and put it out!
A Song of Friendship
After the fire, Cecily and the monkeys become even closer friends. James, one of the young monkeys, even writes a song for Cecily! The very last page of the book shows the words and music for the song. The monkeys are drawn as musical notes, and Cecily is drawn as the treble clef symbol. It's a sweet way to show their strong friendship.
