The Story of Gallimard
How Gallimard Began
Éditions Gallimard was founded on May 31, 1911. It started in Paris, France. The founders were Gaston Gallimard, André Gide, and Jean Schlumberger. They first called their company Les Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF).
Early Success and New Names
From 1911 to 1919, NRF published many books. One famous early book was La Jeune Parque by Paul Valéry. The company also published the second part of In Search of Lost Time. This book, In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower, won the Prix Goncourt. This was the first time a Gallimard book won this major French award. In 1919, the company changed its name to "Librairie Gallimard."
Publishing During Difficult Times
During World War II, France was occupied. Gaston Gallimard worked to keep his publishing company going. He returned to Paris in 1940 to discuss how to continue publishing. Despite the challenging circumstances, the company managed to keep printing books.
