Cedar was started around 1885 by a lumberman named Benjamin Boughey. He first called it Cedar City. This was because it was located in a large cedar forest. Even after the post office, simply named Cedar, opened on August 15, 1893, the train station on the Manistee and North-Eastern Railroad was still known as Cedar City for a long time.
