Cedar was a small, unincorporated community located in Raleigh County, West Virginia. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually managed by the county. Cedar was also known by another name, Viacova. This community even had its own post office at one point.

Where Was Cedar?

Cedar was found in the beautiful state of West Virginia, specifically within Raleigh County. This area is known for its mountains and rich history. The community was situated at an elevation of about 2,274 feet (693 meters) above sea level. This means it was quite high up in the Appalachian Mountains.

A Former Coal Town

Like many places in West Virginia, Cedar was once a coal town. Coal towns were communities that grew up around coal mines. People moved there to work in the mines, and the towns provided homes and services for them. These towns were very important to the economy of West Virginia for many years. When the coal mines closed, many of these communities, like Cedar, became much smaller or disappeared.
