Cedar Creek is a small river in Virginia, USA. It is about 12 miles (19 km) long. This creek is special because it flows right under the famous Natural Bridge. This amazing natural rock arch is a very important landmark! Cedar Creek eventually joins the larger James River.

Where Cedar Creek Flows

Starting Its Journey

Cedar Creek begins in the Short Hills Wildlife Management Area. This area is located where Rockbridge and Botourt County meet. The creek starts near the top of the Short Hills.

Flowing Downhill

For about 3 miles (5 km), the creek flows northeast. It follows the top of the ridge. Then, it drops down the mountain towards the east. When it reaches the bottom, Cedar Creek changes direction. It turns south, then southeast.

Under the Bridge

The creek flows under Interstate 81. After that, it goes under the incredible Natural Bridge. This natural bridge carries U.S. Route 11 over the creek.

Reaching the James River

Cedar Creek continues flowing south for another 2 miles (3 km). Finally, it reaches the James River. This meeting point is near a place called Gilmore Mills.

Exploring Cedar Creek Trail

The Cedar Creek Trail is a fun path for visitors. It runs right alongside Cedar Creek. The trail is about 1 and a quarter miles (2 km) long.

What You Can See

Walking along the trail, you can see the famous Natural Bridge up close. There are also other interesting sights to explore. You might see a recreated Native American village. There is also a place called Saltpeter Cave. You can also find the Lost River and the beautiful Lace Falls. It is a great way to experience nature!
