A Look Back: Cele's History
How Cele Got Its Name
Cele was first settled in the 1890s. People say it was named after Lucille Custer. She was the daughter of a local store owner.
Early Days and the Post Office
A post office opened in Cele in 1896. It helped people send and receive mail. The post office stayed open until 1902, with a short break in 1899. John Pitts Johns was the person in charge of the post office. After the post office closed, mail was sent from New Sweden. Today, mail comes from Manor.
Population and Local Business
From the 1930s to the 1960s, Cele had about 25 people living there. It was still shown on county maps in 1990. For a long time, the Cele Store was the only public business. It was a popular spot, known as a barbecue restaurant, a bar, and a place for events. Sadly, the Cele Store closed its doors on March 30, 2024.
