Manor is a city in Travis County, Texas, USA. It's about 12 miles northeast of Austin. Manor is part of the larger Austin area.
In 2020, about 13,652 people lived there. Manor is one of Austin's fastest-growing suburbs. In 2018, Realtor.com said it was the seventh fastest-growing suburb in America. In 2019, U.S. News and World Report called it the 17th best small suburb to live in.

Exploring Manor, Texas
Manor is located along U.S. Highway 290. This highway is about 12 miles (19 km) east of downtown Austin. The city covers an area of about 9.83 square miles (25.45 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land.
Manor's Economy and Travel
In 2006, new toll roads opened in central Texas. These included State Highway 130 and State Highway 45. These roads made it easier to get to Manor.
A large Walmart store was built on the east side of town. It is near where U.S. Highway 290 and FM 973 meet. Manor Medical Center also started construction in 2013.
Manor in Movies and TV
Manor has been a filming location for several movies. One famous movie filmed here was What's Eating Gilbert Grape. It starred Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. The story featured a boy who often climbed Manor's old water tower. This water tower is no longer used but is still a landmark in the city center.
Some episodes of the TV show "Fear the Walking Dead" were also filmed in Manor.
Airport Plans
Manor was once considered for a new international airport. This airport would have replaced the busy Robert Mueller Municipal Airport. However, environmental groups like the Sierra Club raised concerns. This slowed down the plans. Later, Bergstrom Air Force Base closed, and it was rebuilt into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. This new airport opened in 1999.

Most of Manor is served by the Manor Independent School District. In 2013, President Obama visited Manor New Technology High School. A small part of the city is also within the Elgin Independent School District.
Technology in Manor
Manor was the first government group in the USA to use QR Codes for sharing information. There are 24 QR Code signs around Manor. You can find them on city landmarks and buildings. These codes let people use their smartphones to learn about the city. Manor also works with many small companies for high-tech services.

The Manor area has many places to enjoy the outdoors.
Jennie Lane Park
Jennie Lane Park is in downtown Manor. It's a hub for community events. These events include the Manor Farmers Market and Summertime Movie Series. The park also hosts "Christmas in the Park."
Jennie Lane Park is a "Smart Park." It has WiFi access. It also has coded signs that you can scan with a smartphone. These signs give you historical facts and other information. The park features a gazebo, a pavilion, and outdoor exercise equipment. This equipment was provided by a grant to help people be healthier.
East Metro Park
East Metro Park is a large outdoor area. It has fields for baseball and soccer. There's also a basketball court and playgrounds. You can find hiking trails and ponds there too. The park has pavilions that you can use for free or rent. It also has a swimming pool managed by the YMCA of Austin. This park is just five minutes southeast of Manor.
Community Parks
Several neighborhoods in Manor have their own parks. These include Wildhorse Creek, ShadowGlen, and Stonewater. They offer playgrounds and multi-use fields. ShadowGlen has a large water park and a junior Olympic-size pool. Next to ShadowGlen is a golf course. Golf Digest named it one of America's Best New Courses in 2004.
History of Manor
Manor was named after James B. Manor. He settled near Gilleland Creek, west of where downtown Manor is today.
Early Schools and Post Office
A school for boys opened in 1854. It was located northwest of the current Manor High School. In 1858, a school for girls opened near the present Manor Elementary School. A post office was set up in James Manor's home in 1859. It was called Grassdale, and James Manor was the Post Master. Two stores were built in the area in 1868 and 1869.
Railroad and Growth
In late 1871, the Houston and Texas Central Railway built a railroad line. This line connected to the Texas capital. James Manor donated land for the railway to pass through what is now the town. The first train arrived in Austin on Christmas Day 1871. The community of Manor was officially established and named the next year.
Manor became an incorporated town in March 1913. It became a general law city in 1921. People expected the city to keep growing. However, two big fires destroyed most of the business area. Also, cotton farming declined because of the boll weevil insect. Because of these challenges, Manor stayed a small city for most of the 1900s.
Recent Mayors
In 2013, Rita Johnse was elected mayor. She was the first female Hispanic mayor of Manor. In 2019, Larry Wallace Jr. was elected. He was the first African-American mayor.
