Maria Celeste Rebordão Rodrigues (born March 14, 1923 – died August 1, 2018) was a famous Portuguese singer. She was known for singing a special type of music called fado. Celeste was also the younger sister of another very famous fado singer, Amália Rodrigues.

The Life of Celeste Rodrigues

Early Years and Moving to Lisbon

Celeste Rodrigues was born in a town called Fundão in Portugal. This was on March 14, 1923. When she was five years old, her family moved to the big city of Lisbon.

Celeste started working at a young age. Her first job was in a factory that made cakes. Later, she and her sister Amália worked together in a shop. This shop sold local products from different parts of Portugal.

Becoming a Fado Singer

Celeste's singing talent was soon noticed. A person named José Miguel heard her sing. He was very impressed and told her she should become a professional singer. By the time she was 22, Celeste was singing regularly at a place called the Casablanca. This place is now known as the Teatro ABC.

When she was 25, Celeste met an actor named Varela Silva. They later got married and had two daughters together.

Life Changes and Continued Singing

After a big change in Portugal in 1974, Celeste Rodrigues traveled to Canada. She stayed there for about six months. Her marriage to Varela Silva ended during this time. After Canada, she moved to the United States. For many years, she would travel between her homes in Lisbon and Washington, D.C.. Her two daughters lived in Washington, D.C.

Her Special Fado Style

Even though Celeste Rodrigues did not become as widely known as her sister Amália, she became very famous in Portugal. She had many popular songs. Some of her well-known recordings include Lenda das Algas (which means "Legend of the Seaweed") and Já é tarde ("It is already late"). Her song Fado Celeste was also very important to her career.

Celeste Rodrigues sang fado in a traditional way. This was different from her sister, who sang a more modern style of fado. In 2018, Celeste was the oldest fado singer in the world. She kept singing even at 95 years old!

Celeste Rodrigues passed away on August 1, 2018, in Lisbon. She was buried in the Artists' Field at Prazeres Cemetery.
