Cellach I is known from old historical writings. Historians like Walter Bower and Andrew of Wyntoun wrote about him. They said he was the first bishop of St. Andrews. However, older records from before the 1400s simply called him "Bishop."

When Did Cellach Serve?

Cellach became a bishop during the time of King Giric of Scotland. This was around 877 to 889 AD. He continued to be a bishop into the reign of King Constantine II.

The Important Meeting at Scone

A very important event happened in 906 AD. Bishop Cellach met with King Constantine II. They met at a place called the "hill of belief" near Scone. Scone was a royal city back then.

What Happened at Scone?

At this meeting, King Constantine and Bishop Cellach made a promise. They agreed that the laws of the Christian faith should be followed. They also agreed that the rules for churches and gospels should be kept. This was to be done according to the traditions of the Gaels. This meeting was a big step for the church in Scotland. It showed a shift in how the church was organized.

Cellach's Legacy

By the 1400s, people looked back at Cellach as the very first important bishop of Scotland. We do not know the exact year Cellach died. But we know he passed away before 960 AD. This was when his successor, Fothad I, died.
