Cemil Erlertürk: A Football Legend
His Early Football Days
Cemil Gürgen Erlertürk was born in İzmir, a city in Turkey. He grew up loving football. He played for Altay SK before joining one of Turkey's biggest clubs, Galatasaray SK.
In 1931, young Cemil tried out for Galatasaray SK. He wanted to join the team, but he wasn't chosen at first. This shows that even great players sometimes face challenges.
Amazing Goal Records
Cemil played as a forward for Galatasaray SK for six seasons. A forward is a player whose main job is to score goals. And Cemil was very good at it!
Even though he never won the Istanbul Football League with Galatasaray, he became the top scorer in the league. This means he scored more goals than anyone else.
- In the 1939-40 season, Cemil scored an incredible 30 goals in just 16 games. He was the first and only player to score so many goals in one season.
- Three seasons later, in 1942-43, he scored 22 goals in 11 games. This means he scored an average of 2 goals per game! No other player in the Istanbul League has reached such a high scoring rate.
The "Mule" Nickname
Cemil had a teammate named Alexander Nikólaos Vafiadis, who was nicknamed Boduri. Boduri was famous for helping Cemil score many of his goals by passing the ball to him.
Sometimes, Boduri would get tackled very hard before he could pass the ball to Cemil. Because of these tough tackles, Boduri started calling Cemil "Katır," which means "Mule" in Turkish. This nickname stuck, and Cemil Gürgen became known as "Katır."
Cemil also holds a special record in the Intercontinental Derby. This is a huge football match between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, two rival teams. Cemil scored 12 goals in these derby matches. In 1939, he scored four goals against Fenerbahçe in one game. This is still a record for the most goals scored by a player in a single derby match, and he shares this record with others.
Beyond Football
A Pilot and Coach
Cemil Gürgen Erlertürk was not just a football star. He was also a skilled sailplane pilot. This means he could fly planes that don't have an engine, using air currents to stay in the sky.
Later in his life, in 1955, Cemil moved to the United States. There, he became a football coach at the University of Illinois. He continued to share his love and knowledge of football with new players.
