History of Central
How Central Started
The community of Central was first planned out by William Smith in 1890. He designed it with fifteen lots and two main streets. These streets covered about 5 acres of land.
Important Buildings and Businesses
The church in the middle of Central received its land from Charles Kopp in 1882. Later, in 1907, the original church gave this land to the Missionary Society of the Churches of Christ.
A business called Longbottom-Hardsaw was built in Central in 1947. You can find it at the corner of Central Drive SW and Heth Washington Road SW.
Today, a Dollar General store is also located in Central. It's on the northwest corner of State Road 135 and Heth Washington Road SW.
Post Office and School Changes
Central used to have its own Post Office. It operated from 1879 until 1999. After that, the mail services for the area were handled by the Mauckport and Corydon Post Offices.
Central also had its own school for many years, from 1900 to 1945. In 1945, the school became part of the larger South Harrison Consolidated School District. This meant students from Central joined a bigger school system.
Where is Central Located?
Central is found where Heth Washington Road SW and Central Drive SW meet. It is located south of Corydon. You can find it north of Mauckport and east of New Amsterdam.
