The Central Street District is a historic area in Andover, Massachusetts. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's recognized as a place with important history. The district includes many old houses and churches. These buildings show how people lived and built things long ago.
A Busy Road in the Past
Central Street was a very important road way back in the late 1700s. It connected big cities like Boston and Salem to other towns like Haverhill. It also led to the original center of Andover, which is now called North Andover. Imagine it as a busy highway for horse-drawn carriages!
Old Churches of the District
The Central Street District is home to three historic churches. These buildings are great examples of different architectural styles.
- South Church: The first church in what is now Andover was built here in 1709. The building you see today was built in 1861. It has a style called Romanesque Revival, which looks grand and solid.
- First Baptist Church: This church was built in 1834. It's made of brick and shows the Greek Revival style. This style often looks like ancient Greek temples. A local builder named Jacob Chickering helped build it.
