The Central of Georgia Railway Company Shop Property was once a very busy place. It was the main office for the Central of Georgia Railway in Savannah, Georgia. This large area included many important buildings.

Imagine a place where trains were fixed and managed. This property had a building for storing goods called a freight house. There was also a cotton yard with brick gates. This yard was shared with the nearby Central of Georgia Depot and Trainshed. A brick bridge, called a viaduct, connected the property to other train lines.

Next to these tracks was another important building. It was called "The Gray Building" and was built in 1856. The railway company later moved its main offices there. This building then became known as "The Red Building."

In 1963, another company, the Southern Railway, bought the Central Railroad. After this, many of the old railway buildings in Savannah were not used as much.

A Place in History

The Central of Georgia Railway Company Shop Property is very old and important. On March 5, 1970, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes buildings and sites that are important to American history.

Later, in 1976, the nearby CG Depot and Trainshed became a National Historic Landmark. This is an even higher honor for historical places. In 1978, the larger area of the Central of Georgia Railroad: Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities also got its own special listing.

What It Is Today

Today, this historic property has a new life. It is now known as Clark Hall. Before that, it was called Eichberg Hall. It is part of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). This college uses the buildings for its School of Building Arts.

The old Gray Building, which was once the railway's headquarters, is also part of SCAD. It became the original museum for the college. In 1993, it was renamed Kiah Hall. These old railway buildings now help students learn about art and design.
