The Centre for Cities is a group that studies cities in the United Kingdom. It's an independent organization, which means it doesn't belong to any political party. Its main job is to understand how cities grow and change, especially in terms of their economy. They want to know what makes cities successful and how they can become even better places to live and work. The Centre for Cities is also a charity registered in England.

History of the Centre

The Centre for Cities started in March 2005. At first, it was part of another group called the IPPR. In November 2007, the Centre for Cities became an independent organization.

Since 2017, Andrew Carter has been the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Centre for Cities. He has over 20 years of experience. His work focuses on how cities can improve their economies.

What the Centre Researches

The Centre for Cities creates a yearly report called "Cities Outlook." This report looks at how well the 64 largest towns and cities in the United Kingdom are doing economically.

Since 2016, the Centre for Cities has updated how it defines "primary urban areas." These are the main built-up areas of cities. Based on their new method, they now recognize 63 primary urban areas in the UK.

The Centre has also worked with the All Party Urban Development Group. This is a group of politicians from different parties who are interested in city development. In 2018, the Centre released a report. It suggested that the government should help weaker regions in the UK. The report said these regions should attract more businesses that export goods. This would help improve the UK's overall business success.

How the Centre is Funded

The Centre for Cities gets money from different sources to do its research. In November 2022, a website called Who Funds You? checked how transparent the Centre's funding was. They gave the Centre for Cities a "B" grade. This rating system goes from A (most transparent) to E (least transparent).
