Century 21 Real Estate LLC is a large American company that helps people buy and sell homes. It's a network of many smaller real estate offices around the world. These offices are owned by different people, but they all use the Century 21 name and system. The company started in 1971 in the United States. Today, it has about 14,000 offices in 86 countries and territories. More than 147,000 sales professionals work for Century 21 offices globally. Its main office is in Madison, New Jersey.
History of Century 21
Century 21 Real Estate was started in 1971 by two real estate agents. Their names were Art Bartlett and Marsh Fisher. They began their company in Orange County, California.
How the Name "Century 21" Was Chosen
Art Bartlett shared how they picked the name for their new company. He wanted a name that sounded like it had been around for a long time. His partner suggested "20th Century Realty," but that name was hard to register. Then, they thought of "21st Realty," but they didn't like it much. Finally, the idea "Century 21" came up. Art Bartlett liked it, even though it sounded a bit futuristic at the time. Marsh Fisher, the other founder, thought it was too futuristic at first. He preferred "Green Valley." But in the end, they both agreed on "Century 21," and that's the name they used for their new company.

Changes in Ownership
Over the years, Century 21 has been owned by different companies. In 1979, a company called Trans World Corporation bought Century 21. They wanted to focus on hotels and housing.
Then, in 1985, another big company called MetLife bought Century 21 from Trans World Corporation. MetLife later decided to leave the housing business. So, in 1995, Century 21 was sold again to Hospitality Franchise Systems. This company later changed its name to Cendant.
In 2006, Cendant split into different companies. Century 21 became part of a new company called Realogy. Today, Realogy is known as Anywhere Real Estate. So, Century 21 is now part of Anywhere Real Estate.
