A Hill with a Story

The little hill in Cerrito has an interesting story. Long ago, there was a statue of a former Paraguayan president, Alfredo Stroessner, at the top of the hill.

Right before he was no longer president in 1989, the statue was damaged. Some people believe it was hit by a lightning strike, which they saw as a sign that the president's time was ending. Others say the local people actually pulled the statue down themselves to celebrate the change in leadership. They say the lightning story was made up by local politicians who were part of the same political group, the Colorado Party (Paraguay), as the former president.

People and History

Cerrito is home to several Native American tribes. In areas that are hard to reach because of rough dirt roads, some very old tombs from the time before Columbus arrived were found. These discoveries tell us about the rich history of the people who lived here long ago.

Cerrito is also famous as the birthplace of Justo Villar, a well-known former goalkeeper for the Paraguay national football team.
