Ñeembucú (pronounced nyem-boo-KOO) is a department in the south of Paraguay. Its capital city is Pilar. This area is mostly countryside. It is home to some of the oldest and best-preserved Jesuit ruins, which are located near the town of Humaitá.

Geography and Landscape
The land in Ñeembucú is very flat. It has wide, grassy fields. You might see some wet areas called swamps. There are also green patches of dense trees and bushes called "montes." These montes are not mountains. They offer shade for cattle that graze on the flat plains. Most of the land in Ñeembucú is used for farming, especially for raising cattle and sheep.
Borders and Neighbors
Ñeembucú shares its borders with other places. To the west, it is next to the Rio Paraguay and Argentina. To the south, it borders the Rio Paraná and Argentina. To the north, it is next to the Central department of Paraguay. To the east, it borders the departments of Paraguarí and Misiones.
Important History
Ñeembucú was a very important place during the War of the Triple Alliance. This war happened a long time ago. Many battles took place here, including the battles of Tuyutí, Curupaytí, Boquerón del Sauce, and Humaitá. These events are a big part of the department's history.
