History of the Ebner Brewery
Andrés Ebner was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1850. He moved to Peru in 1868 and then to Chile a year later. In 1870, he and his partner Otto Schleyer started a brewery in Talca.
With the money he earned in Talca, Andrés Ebner bought another brewery in Santiago in 1878. This brewery was on La Cañadilla, which is now called Independencia Avenue.
What the Brewery Produced
In 1879, Ebner brought in new machines to start his own brewery. He even moved some equipment from his old factory in Talca. In 1880, he bought another company called La Estrella, which made a drink called Malta. He moved their factory to his brewery site.
The Ebner brewery became very famous. It produced a type of beer called pilsner beer. This beer was known as one of the best in Chile. The factory also made the popular soft drink Bilz. Bilz was the first Chilean soft drink, created in 1905. It was launched at a big event at the Municipal Theatre of Santiago.
The Ebner factory was also the first place in Chile to make ice. It could produce a huge amount of ice every day, about 50,000 kilograms!
The Ebner House
Between 1885 and 1888, Andrés Ebner built his home right next to the brewery. The first floor of the house was used as offices for the business. The second floor was where he lived with his family. We don't know for sure who designed the house, but it might have been a German architect named Adolf Möller.
Andrés Ebner passed away in 1908, but his brewery was still doing very well.
Later Years and New Life
In 1916, Ebner's family sold the factory to a company called the Compañía de las Cervecerías Unidas. The brewery kept making products under the Ebner name until 1978, when it finally closed down. The buildings were left empty and then taken apart between 1981 and 1982.
In 1986, a businessman named Luis Echavarri bought the property. He had a big idea to turn the old factory area into a new place for food, shops, and even a beer museum. This new area, called Mall Barrio Independencia, opened in September 2018.
The Ebner House Today
The old house of Andrés Ebner is a long building that runs along Independencia Avenue. It has two floors. The first floor used to be offices, and the second floor was Andrés Ebner's home.
The building has a special old-fashioned style, like buildings from the Renaissance period in Europe. It has cool features like rounded windows on the first floor. The side of the building has columns and balconies with decorative railings. There's also a small tower, called a turret, on one corner of the building.
