Independencia is a commune and city in Chile. Its name means "independence" in Spanish. It is part of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. The main street in Independencia is called Independencia Avenue.

About Independencia's Population
Independencia covers an area of about 7.4 square kilometers (2.9 square miles). In 2002, a census showed that 65,479 people lived there. This included 30,633 men and 34,846 women. The entire commune is an urban area, meaning it's a city, not a rural countryside.
Population Changes Over Time
Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Independencia went down by 15.8%. This means 12,315 fewer people lived there. By 2006, it was estimated that the population was around 57,886 people.

Independencia is a commune, which is like a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is similar to a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

The alcalde for the years 2012-2016 was Gonzalo Durán Baronti. He is a member of the Socialist Party of Chile (PS).

In the Senate, which is the other part of Chile's parliament, Independencia is represented by Guido Girardi Lavín (PPD) and Jovino Novoa Vásquez (UDI).
