Cervix facts for kids
The cervix is a special part of the uterus, which is also called the womb. It's like a small, narrow tunnel that connects the uterus to the vagina. Think of it as a gate or a doorway for the uterus. It plays a very important role in a female's body, especially during pregnancy and the menstrual cycle.

What is the Cervix?
The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus. It's shaped a bit like a donut or a cylinder. It has a small opening in the middle that allows things to pass through. This opening is usually very tiny, but it can open wider when needed.
What Does the Cervix Do?
The cervix has several key jobs:
- During Pregnancy: When a baby grows inside the uterus, the cervix acts like a strong, closed door. It helps keep the baby safely inside the uterus until it's time for birth. When labor begins, the cervix slowly opens up to allow the baby to pass through.
- During the Menstrual Cycle: Every month, if a pregnancy doesn't happen, the body sheds the lining of the uterus. This is called a period. The cervix allows this menstrual blood to flow out of the uterus.
How the Cervix Changes
The cervix is amazing because it can change its shape and texture.
- During the Menstrual Cycle: The cervix changes throughout the month. Sometimes it feels firm, and other times it feels softer. Its opening also changes size to help with different body functions.
- During Pregnancy: As a pregnancy continues, the cervix stays long and firm to protect the baby. When it's time for the baby to be born, the cervix starts to soften, shorten, and open up. This process is called dilation and effacement.
