Cetate is a small town, also known as a commune, located in Dolj County, in the Oltenia region of Romania. It is made up of two villages: Cetate and Moreni. In 2021, about 4,572 people lived in Cetate commune. Most of them, around 4,118, lived in Cetate village itself, and 454 lived in Moreni.
History of Cetate
The Battle of Cetate (1854)
Cetate has a special place in history because of a battle that happened there. In January 1854, during a big war called the Crimean War, Cetate was the site of an important fight.
Russian soldiers were stationed in Cetate. A Turkish army, based in a nearby town called Calafat, tried to capture Cetate. The battle was very intense, but in the end, neither side fully won. The Turkish army was not able to take control of the town.
Famous People from Cetate
- Gheorghe Vasilichi (1902 – 1974) was born in Cetate. He became an important figure in Romanian politics. He was a Communist politician and statesman, which means he held important government positions and helped lead the country for a time.
