The Chachapoyas antpitta (Grallaria gravesi) is a type of bird that belongs to the antpitta family. This bird is special because it is found only in Peru. This means it is endemic to that country.

It is part of a group of similar birds called the rufous antpitta species complex. Scientists first officially described this bird in 2020. The scientists who discovered it were Morton L. Isler, R. Terry Chesser, Mark B. Robbins, and Peter A. Hosner.

About the Chachapoyas Antpitta

Scientists decided the Chachapoyas antpitta was a new species because it had different plumage (its feathers), unique calls, and different genetics. It is very closely related to the Panao antpitta and the Junín antpitta. These three birds form a "sister group," meaning they are like close cousins in the bird family tree.

Before 2020, people thought the Chachapoyas antpitta was just a part of another bird called G. rufula obscura. That bird is now known as the Junín antpitta.

The bird's scientific name, gravesi, honors Dr. Gary R. Graves. He is an ornithologist, which is a scientist who studies birds. His work helped lead to the discovery of the Chachapoyas antpitta.

Where It Lives

The Chachapoyas antpitta lives only on the eastern side of the Andes mountains in Peru. You can find it in the Peruvian regions of Amazonas, San Martín, and Huánuco.

These birds like to live in wet montane forests. They also live on the edges of these forests. The Huallaga River acts like a natural border. It separates the Chachapoyas antpitta from its close relative, the Panao antpitta.
