What Makes the Junín Antpitta Special?
Scientists first described the Junín antpitta in 1896. Back then, they thought it was just a type of another bird. But in 2020, a new study looked closely at these birds. They found big differences in their genetics, their songs, and their feather colors. Because of these differences, scientists decided it was a unique species. So, it became known as the Junín antpitta.
Where Does Its Name Come From?
This bird gets its name from the place it lives. It is named after Junín, a department in Peru. This is the only place where you can find this bird.
Where the Junín Antpitta Lives
The Junín antpitta lives only in the eastern Andes Mountains in Peru. Specifically, it lives in the Junín department. Its home area is surrounded by several rivers. The Perené and Paucartambo rivers are to the north. The Ene river is to the west. To the south are the Mantaro and Pampas rivers.
Its Mountain Home
These birds live high up in the mountains. You can find them at elevations from about 3,000 to 3,600 meters (9,800 to 11,800 feet). They like to live in wet montane forests. They especially prefer the lower parts of the forest, near the ground.
Neighbors and Rivers
The Junín antpitta has relatives nearby. The O'Neill's antpitta lives close by, but the Perené and Paucartambo rivers keep them separated. Another relative, the Urubamba antpitta, is separated by the Apurímac river.
