Linebackers coach & defensive run game coordinator

Chad Kelton Williams (born in 1979) is an American college football coach. He used to be a professional football player. He is currently the linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator for the University of Southern Mississippi. He has held these jobs since 2024. Before becoming a coach, he played as a safety for five seasons in the National Football League (NFL).

Playing in the NFL

Chad Williams went to college at the University of Southern Mississippi. After college, he was picked by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2002 NFL draft. He played for the Ravens from 2002 to 2005.

In 2006, he joined the San Francisco 49ers. He also signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007, but he did not play for them.

Chad's Stats as a Player

During his five years in the NFL, Chad Williams played in 79 games. He started six of those games. He made 164 tackles, which means he stopped the player with the ball many times. He also caught 9 interceptions, which is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player. Chad scored three touchdowns and had 7 sacks (tackling the quarterback). He also knocked down 25 pass attempts.

Coaching Football

After his playing career, Chad Williams became a football coach. He has coached at several colleges.

Early Coaching Roles

Williams started as a defensive assistant at Morehouse College in 2011. He then worked as a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State (2012) and Middle Tennessee (2013).

In 2014, he became the linebackers coach at West Georgia. He then became the defensive coordinator at Valdosta State in 2015. A defensive coordinator is in charge of the team's defense.

He also coached special teams and defensive backs at West Alabama in 2016. Later that year, he became the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for Savannah State.

Coaching at Central Arkansas

From 2018 to 2020, Chad Williams was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the University of Central Arkansas.

Returning to Southern Miss

In December 2020, it was announced that Williams would return to his old college, Southern Miss, as a coach. He started as the cornerbacks coach in 2021 and stayed in that role until 2022.

In 2023, he became the inside linebackers coach. Then, for the 2024 season, he was promoted to linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator. This means he helps the team's linebackers and works on stopping the opposing team's running plays.
