History of Chadwick
Chadwick is the newest community in Carroll County. It began around 1853 when Jacob Isenhart built the very first house in the area.
How Chadwick Got Its Name
In 1866, a railroad company called the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was building a new train line. They needed land for new towns along the railway. A company called the St. Paul Land Company wanted to buy 60 acres of land from Alexander Snow to create a new town.
Mr. Snow wanted $125 per acre, but the Land Company only offered $100. When they couldn't agree, local farmers stepped in. They raised $1,500 to help pay the difference, making sure the new town would be built there. The Land Company then named the new town Chadwick to honor one of its officials. The official plan for the town was recorded on April 12, 1886.
Becoming an Official Village
As the population grew, people wanted Chadwick to become an official village. The papers to make Chadwick an incorporated village were approved on September 26, 1882. After this, a village board was elected, and a police magistrate and marshal were appointed to help run the town.
The First Train Station
The very first train station in Chadwick was quite simple! It was a manure spreader (a farm machine) placed on the side of the tracks. It had wires and telegraph equipment to send and receive messages about train movements.
A proper new station was built in 1887. Frank Lacy was the first agent there, but he was only a telegraph operator. Passengers couldn't buy tickets at the station; they paid their fares once they were on the train. The station was made larger in 1926 to handle more passengers and goods.
