Chaffee is a small, unincorporated community in Cass County, North Dakota, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's often part of a larger county.

A Look Back at Chaffee's History

Chaffee has an interesting past, connected to the growth of railroads and local families.

How Chaffee Got Its Name

The community was named after a man named Eben Chaffee. He was a promoter, which means he helped develop and publicize the area. The town was officially mapped out, or platted, in 1898. This happened soon after a railroad line was built and extended to that spot.

Chaffee's Post Office Days

A post office was opened in Chaffee in 1894. This was an important place for people to send and receive mail. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1966.

A Connection to the RMS Titanic

Eben Chaffee had a son named Herbert Fuller Chaffee. Herbert was a passenger on the famous ship, the RMS Titanic. He was traveling in first class with his wife, Carrie Constance Toogood. The Titanic sank in 1912. Sadly, Herbert did not survive the sinking. However, his wife, Carrie, was among the survivors.
