Chaim Dov Keller (1930 – August 17, 2020) was an important American Haredi rabbi and Talmudic scholar. He was the head (called a rosh yeshiva) of the Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago for sixty years. Life Story
Chaim Dov Keller was born in New York City in 1930. He began his studies at Yeshiva University. Later, he attended the Telshe Yeshiva in Cleveland, Ohio. There, he learned from respected leaders like Rabbis Chaim Mordechai Katz and Eliyahu Meir Bloch. Rabbi Bloch became a very important teacher and mentor to him.
Leading the Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago
In 1960, Rabbi Avrohom Chaim Levin and Rabbi Chaim Schmelczer were chosen to start a new branch of the yeshiva. This new school was opened in Chicago. The next year, in 1961, Rabbi Keller became the head of this Chicago branch.
The Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago grew to be a major Jewish learning center. It was especially important for students following the "Lithuanian" Jewish tradition. Rabbi Keller led the yeshiva for six decades, which is sixty years.
Teaching and Guiding Students
During his time, Rabbi Keller gave tens of thousands of shiurim, which are Torah lessons. He also gave many mussar talks, focusing on Jewish ethics and character. He taught thousands of students over the years.
He cared deeply about each student. He would often give personal advice and guidance. This included helping them choose higher yeshivas for advanced studies. He also helped them find a shidduch, which is a suitable partner for marriage. Even after they married, he continued to offer advice.
His Role with Agudath Israel
As many students graduated from the Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago, the school became very well-known. This also brought more respect to its founders within Agudath Israel of America. This organization is based in New York.
Rabbi Levin was invited to join the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah. This is a very high council of Torah leaders in Agudath Israel. Rabbi Keller became a member of the "Nesius" (Presidium). This was also a very respected position.
Speeches and Writings
Because of his important role, Rabbi Keller often spoke at Agudath Israel's main event. This was their annual convention. He was frequently asked to give official speeches or lectures. For example, he spoke at the 77th convention in 1999. He also spoke at the 80th convention in 2002 and the 83rd convention in 2005. He also wrote articles for The Jewish Observer, which is the Agudah magazine.
Later Life and Passing
Rabbi Keller's first wife passed away in the 1990s. Later, in the 2000s, his son-in-law, Rabbi Dovid Schechter, also passed away. In his later years, Rabbi Keller faced some health challenges.
In March 2020, he became ill with COVID-19. This was during the COVID-19 pandemic in Illinois. He did not recover from the illness. Rabbi Chaim Dov Keller passed away on August 17, 2020.
