Chaleo Yoovidhya (Chinese: 許書標; pinyin: Xǔ Shūbiāo; Thai: เฉลียว อยู่วิทยา, RTGS: Chaliao Yuwitayaa 17 August 1923 – 17 March 2012) was a Thai businessman. He created an energy drink called Krating Daeng. He also helped start the famous Red Bull brand of energy drinks. When he passed away in 2012 at age 88, he was one of the richest people in Thailand. His wealth was estimated to be about US$5 billion.

Early Life and Business Beginnings
Chaleo Yoovidhya was born in Phichit Province, Thailand. His family was poor and raised ducks and traded fruit. He had little formal education.
He moved to Bangkok and started working. He became a salesman for medicines. In the early 1960s, he decided to start his own company. He named it TC Pharmaceuticals.
Creating Krating Daeng
Chaleo wanted to make a special drink. He said he got a "divine inspiration" for an energy-boosting drink. He launched this drink in 1976. It was called Krating Daeng.
The logo for Krating Daeng shows two red bulls. These are not regular cattle. They are wild gaur, which are a type of large wild ox found in Southeast Asia. In Thai, they are called krathing.
The Red Bull Partnership
In 1984, an Austrian salesman named Dietrich Mateschitz discovered Krating Daeng. He found that the drink helped him with jet lag. He decided to work with Chaleo.
Together, they launched an international version of the drink in 1987. They called it "Red Bull." Chaleo provided the original recipe. Mateschitz helped change it a bit for people in Western countries. He also handled the marketing.
Each man invested US$500,000 for 49 percent of the Red Bull company. Chaleo's son, Chalerm Yoovidhya, owned the remaining two percent.
Other Businesses
Chaleo also owned TC Pharmaceuticals. This company made other energy drinks in Thailand. He was also a part-owner of Piyavate Hospital. This is a private hospital in Thailand. He also helped own the company that imports Ferrari sports cars into Thailand.
Later Life and Death
Chaleo Yoovidhya passed away in Bangkok on March 17, 2012. He was 88 years old.
