The name Chalhuanca likely comes from the Quechua word "challwa." This word means 'fish'.

- Fiesta Señor de Ánimas: This is one of the biggest festivals in the Apurímac region. It's also called the patronal festival of the Lord of the Souls of Chalhuanca. It happens every year from July 25 to August 5.
- Yawar Fiesta: A very special part of the festival is the "Yawar Fiesta," or "Toro Pukllay." This is a unique bullfight that includes a condor. It has been declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture. This means it's a very important part of Peru's history and traditions.
