Chancay is a small city in Peru. It is located about 78 km (48 mi) north of Lima, the capital city. Around 63,378 people live there. Long ago, the area was home to the Chancay culture, an ancient civilization that later became part of the Inca Empire.
Today, Chancay is known for its tourism and a very important new deep-water port. This port is being built by China and is expected to start working in November 2024. It will help speed up shipping of resources from Peru to China.
Exploring Chancay's Past
Chancay was officially founded on December 16, 1562. Back then, it was called Villa de Arnedo.
Today, many people from nearby Lima visit Chancay for fun. A popular spot is El Castillo, which means "The Castle." It looks like an old castle but was actually built in the 1800s. Inside the castle, there is a small museum. You can see cool pottery and mummies from the ancient Chancay culture there.
The New Chancay Mega-Port
In 2019, a company called COSCO decided to build a huge new port in Chancay. This port is designed for very large ships. It is part of China's "Belt and Road Initiative," which aims to improve trade routes around the world.
In 2022, another company, China Harbour Engineering Company, agreed to build the port complex. It covers a large area of 992 hectares (2,450 acres). The port includes strong walls called breakwaters, many docks for ships, and a 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) long tunnel leading to big warehouses.
The first part of the port was planned to open in early 2023. When it is fully finished, the port will be able to handle a huge amount of goods. It can manage up to 1.5 million shipping containers and 6 million tons of cargo every year.
The Chancay port is expected to be fully ready in November 2024. This new port will make shipping resources like copper from Peru to China much faster, possibly saving 10 days of travel time. There have been discussions about who will own and use the port in the future. Also, people are talking about how the construction might affect nearby areas, especially because of the tunnel being built.
