Napoleon "Chance" Cummings was a talented baseball player. He was born on June 8, 1892, and passed away on April 22, 1974. Chance played as a first baseman and second baseman. He was famous in the Negro Leagues. He played from 1916 to 1928. Most of his career was with the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants.

His nickname, "Chance," came from a comparison. People said he played like Frank Chance. Frank Chance was a well-known first baseman for the Chicago Cubs.

Early Baseball Days

Chance Cummings started his baseball journey in Jacksonville, Florida. He played for a team called the Duval Giants. This was in the early 1900s. The Duval Giants later moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey. There, they became the original Bacharach Giants. Chance was a key player on this new team. He played with them from 1916 to 1918.

Playing for the Bacharach Giants

After a few years, Chance returned to the Bacharach Giants. He played for them again from 1923 to 1928. This was a very successful time for the team. They were one of the best teams in the Eastern Colored League.

Winning Championships

The Bacharach Giants were very strong in the mid-1920s. With Chance Cummings on the team, they won big. They earned the Eastern Colored League pennants in both 1926 and 1927. A pennant means they were the champions of their league. This was a huge achievement for the team and for Chance.
