Changthang facts for kids
Changthang means "Northern Plateau" in the Tibetan language. It is a huge, high-altitude plateau located in western and northern Tibet. This amazing land stretches about 1,600 kilometers (nearly 1,000 miles) from Ladakh in the west all the way to the Chinese province called Qinghai in the east. It's a very high place with many giant lakes. Changthang is also the special home of the Changpa nomads, who are people who move from place to place with their animals.
The part of Changthang that is in Ladakh, India, had a population of 10,089 people in the year 2000. This area is found in Jammu and Kashmir, close to the Chinese border. It lies to the east and southeast of Leh. Changthang is famous for its lively music and traditional dance. It is also very important for its many valuable animals. These include sheep that produce soft cashmere wool, and goats.
