Chanhu-daro facts for kids
Chanhudaro (also spelled Chanhu Daro) is an ancient place where people used to live a very long time ago. It's an archaeological site, which means it's a place where scientists dig up old things to learn about the past. Chanhudaro was part of the amazing Indus Valley civilization, one of the world's first great civilizations. It was specifically part of a later period called the Jhukar phase.
This old town is located about 130 kilometers (or 80 miles) south of another famous ancient city, Mohenjo-daro, in a country called Pakistan. People lived in this settlement for a very long time, from about 4000 BC to 1700 BC. Chanhudaro is thought to have been a very important place for making beautiful carnelian beads. These beads were popular jewelry back then.
Discovering Chanhudaro
Scientists first started digging at Chanhudaro in the middle of the 1930s. The work was done by two groups: the American School of Indic and Iranian Studies and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
After Pakistan became an independent country, another important archaeologist named Mohammed Rafique Mughal also did more work in this area. Their discoveries helped us learn a lot about the people who lived there thousands of years ago.
