Chanz, California facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Chanz was once a small community, or "settlement," located in Kern County, California. It was situated about 37 miles (60 km) north of the town of Mojave, along an old stagecoach route. A stagecoach route was like an old highway where horse-drawn carriages, called stagecoaches, would travel, carrying people and mail.

The Story of Chanz

Chanz was not a large town, but it played a small part in the history of Kern County. It had a post office that was open for a few years, from 1906 to 1909. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages.

The name "Chanz" was chosen to honor George A. Chanz, who was the very first postmaster there. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office. After 1909, the post office closed, and eventually, the settlement of Chanz faded away, becoming what is known as a "former settlement." This means it was once a place where people lived and worked, but it no longer exists as an active community today.
