The Chapel Street Historic District is a special area in Downtown New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut. It covers about 23 acres. This district is famous for its old buildings. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's recognized as an important historical place in the United States.
The district includes buildings from Park Street to Temple Street. It stretches between Chapel and Crown streets. Some parts also go from High Street to Temple Street. These are between George and Crown streets. The district is next to the New Haven Green and the Yale University campus. It also borders the Dwight Street Historic District.
Exploring the Chapel Street District
In 1984, this historic district had 102 buildings. Most of these buildings, 76 of them, are considered "contributing buildings." This means they help show the area's history. Most buildings here are made of brick. They show many different styles of architecture.
A Look Back in Time
Maps from the 1700s and early 1800s show this area was mostly homes. But around 1825, shops and businesses started to appear. Even with new shops, many homes stayed in the area. The oldest building in the district is the Ira Atwater House. It was built in 1817.
Most of the buildings you see today were built later. They were constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These new buildings replaced older homes and shops. One of the oldest commercial buildings in New Haven is here. It was built around 1831 on Church Street.
Churches and Theaters
The district also has three church buildings. One of these is the former Calvary Church Baptist Church. It was built in 1871. Today, this building is home to the Yale Repertory Theatre. This shows how old buildings can find new uses.
