Chapin is a small community in northern Franklin County, Iowa, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community and a census-designated place. This means it's a recognized area but doesn't have its own local government like a city.
Chapin is located near U.S. Route 65. It lies north of Hampton, which is the main town in Franklin County. Chapin is about 1,155 feet (352 meters) above sea level. Even though it's a small place, Chapin has its own post office. This post office has been open since February 29, 1860. In 2020, 71 people lived in Chapin.

History of Chapin
Chapin was officially planned out in 1858. A person named Josiah Bushnell Grinnell created the town. He had also founded another town in Iowa called Grinnell, Iowa. Josiah Grinnell named Chapin after his wife, whose maiden name was Chapin. In 1940, the community had a population of 150 people.

According to the census taken in 2020, 71 people lived in Chapin. These people lived in 38 different households. There were 18 families among these households. The community had about 720 people per square mile.
Most of the people living in Chapin were White (85.9%). A small number (1.4%) were from other races. About 12.7% of the people were from two or more races. About 5.6% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
In terms of households, about 10.5% had children under 18 living there. Many households (44.7%) were married couples. Some households (5.3%) were cohabitating couples. About 34.2% had a female head of household without a partner. About 15.8% had a male head of household without a partner.

Education in Chapin
Students in Chapin attend schools within the West Fork Community School District. This school district was created in 2011. It was formed when two other school districts joined together. These were the Sheffield–Chapin–Meservey–Thornton (SCMT) Community School District and the Rockwell–Swaledale Community School District.
The SCMT district itself was formed in 2007. This happened when the Sheffield–Chapin Community School District and the Meservey–Thornton Community School District merged. Even earlier, the Sheffield–Chapin district was formed in 1960. That merger combined the Sheffield Community School District and the Chapin Community School District. So, Chapin's schools have been part of several mergers over the years.
