What Happened?
On July 16, 1950, American soldiers were fighting near the Kum River. This was part of the Battle of Taejon. Some soldiers were badly wounded and could not move. They were left behind in a small valley. Among them was a chaplain, Father Herman Felhoelter. He stayed with the wounded soldiers to give them comfort.
North Korean soldiers found these wounded Americans. The American soldiers were unarmed and helpless. Sadly, the North Korean soldiers killed them. Father Felhoelter was also killed while trying to help the wounded. This act was against the rules of war, which protect wounded soldiers and chaplains.
