A Look Back: Chapman's Story
Chapman began as a busy lumber town. It was built along the former Louisville and Nashville Railroad line. The main business here was cutting down trees and turning them into wood products.
The W. T. Smith Lumber Company was very important to Chapman. It was one of the oldest lumber businesses in Alabama. This company had its main offices right in Chapman.
What Was Made in Chapman?
At one time, Chapman was a hub of activity. It had three sawmills, which cut logs into planks. There was also a veneer mill, which made thin sheets of wood. The town also had a box factory and two barrel factories. These factories used the wood to create many different products.
The W. T. Smith Company also built forty-four houses for its workers. This helped create a strong community feel in Chapman.
Sports and Community Life
The W. T. Smith Company cared about its workers' well-being. They sponsored baseball teams for both their white and black employees. The company provided uniforms for both teams. They even gave the players two-week vacations. This allowed the teams to travel and play in summer baseball tournaments.
