Early Life and Military Career
Charalambos Tseroulis was born in Missolonghi, Greece, on June 1, 1879. He studied at the Hellenic Military Academy, which is a special school for future army officers. After finishing his studies, he became an Infantry 2nd Lieutenant in the army on July 16, 1900.
Early in his career, he worked for the Hellenic Military Geographical Service. This service helps create maps and understand the land for military purposes.
Fighting in the Balkan Wars
Tseroulis fought in the Balkan Wars (1912–1913). These were two wars where several countries in the Balkans, including Greece, fought against the Ottoman Empire and then among themselves. During these wars, he was a company commander in the 6th Infantry Regiment.
After the Balkan Wars, in early 1914, he volunteered to fight for the independence of Northern Epirus. This was a region that many Greeks lived in, and they wanted to be part of Greece.
World War I and Beyond
In 1916, during World War I, Charalambos Tseroulis joined a group called the Provisional Government of National Defence. This group aimed to help the Allies in the war. He was put in charge of the 2nd Regiment of the Serres Division. He led his soldiers to the front lines on the Macedonian front.
Key Battles and Promotions
Tseroulis commanded his regiment in the Battle of Skra-di-Legen in May 1918. This was an important battle where Greek forces achieved a victory. Later, in August 1918, he became the chief of infantry for the 3rd Infantry Division. This meant he was in charge of all the foot soldiers in that division.
In May 1919, he took part in the Greek landing at Smyrna. This was when Greek troops landed in the city of Smyrna (now Izmir in Turkey). He helped lead operations to capture the city of Aydın. He also led soldiers from the Archipelago Division to capture Pergamon.
He was later promoted to lead the entire Archipelago Division. He commanded this division during the Greek Summer Offensive of 1920. Under his leadership, his troops captured the cities of Balikesir and Bursa.
Later Career and Retirement
After the elections in November 1920, Tseroulis was removed from the army. This happened because he supported a politician named Eleftherios Venizelos. However, he was called back to duty in September 1922 after a revolution.
He was then appointed commander of the IV Army Corps. He continued to command different army corps until April 21, 1926. On that date, he was named the Minister of Military Affairs. This was a very important job, like being in charge of the entire country's military. He held this position for a few months.
Charalambos Tseroulis retired from the army with the rank of Lieutenant General on August 30, 1926. He passed away on May 2, 1929.
