Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Chariton is a small, quiet place in the northeast part of Putnam County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's managed by the county.

You can find Chariton along Missouri Route DD, about two miles east of Missouri Route 149. The border between Missouri and Iowa is just one mile north of this community. The larger town of Unionville is about 15 miles to the southwest.

History of Chariton

Chariton has a simple but interesting history. A post office was opened here in 1883, which was an important way for people to send and receive mail back then. This post office served the community for many years before closing in 1907. The name "Chariton" comes from the nearby Chariton River, a natural feature that has been important to the area for a long time.
