Early Life and Amateur Golf
Charl Schwartzel was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a young golfer, he was very good. He won many amateur events in South Africa. He also won some international amateur events. These included the 2002 Indian Amateur and English Open Stroke Play Championships. He represented South Africa in the 2002 Eisenhower Trophy.
Becoming a Professional Golfer
Schwartzel became a professional golfer when he was 18 years old. He followed in the footsteps of many other top South African players. He quickly qualified for the European Tour. He was the second youngest South African to do this. He earned enough money to keep his spot on the European Tour in 2003 and 2004.
In 2005, he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship. This is a big tournament in South Africa. It is part of both the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour. He also finished first on the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit. This means he was the top player on that tour. He continued to be the top player on the Sunshine Tour for three years in a row. In 2007, he won the Open de España in Spain. He moved into the top 40 golfers in the world. In 2008, he won the Madrid Masters.
After a year without wins in 2009, Schwartzel started 2010 strong. He won two tournaments in a row in South Africa. These wins helped him get back into the top 50 world rankings.
Winning the Masters Tournament
Charl Schwartzel won the Masters Tournament in 2011. This is one of the biggest golf tournaments in the world. He won by two strokes. He became the third South African to win the Masters. Gary Player and Trevor Immelman were the others. His win happened exactly 50 years after Gary Player's first Masters victory.
In the final round, Schwartzel started four strokes behind the leader. But he played an amazing round of 66. He started with a birdie on the first hole. Then he made an eagle on the third hole. An eagle is when you get the ball in the hole in two shots on a par-5 hole. This helped him catch up to the leader. He then made history by getting four birdies in a row on the last four holes. No one had ever done that before at the Masters. This incredible finish gave him the lead and the win. He earned the famous Green Jacket. After this win, he moved up to 11th in the world rankings.
Career After the Masters
