Early Life and Amateur Golf Career
Charl Schwartzel was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. When he was a young golfer, he was very good. He won many junior amateur events in South Africa. He also won some amateur tournaments in other countries. These included the 2002 Indian Amateur and the English Open Stroke Play Championships. He even represented South Africa in the 2002 Eisenhower Trophy, which is a big team golf event for amateurs.
Becoming a Professional Golfer
Charl became a professional golfer when he was 18 years old in 2002. He followed in the footsteps of many other top South African golfers. He quickly qualified to play on the European Tour. He was the second youngest South African golfer ever to do this. He earned enough money to keep his spot on the European Tour in 2003 and 2004.
In 2005, he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship. This is a big tournament in South Africa that is also part of the European Tour. He also finished first on the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit. This means he was the top player on that tour for the season. He continued to do well, topping the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit for three years in a row (2005-2007). In 2007, he won the Open de España in Spain. In 2008, he won the Madrid Masters.
Charl often plays in the Gary Player Invitational to help raise money for children's charities. In 2010, he started the year by winning two tournaments in a row in South Africa. These wins helped him get back into the top 50 golfers in the world. In 2011, he also joined the PGA Tour in the United States. He won the Joburg Open again in January 2011.
Winning the Masters Tournament
Charl Schwartzel achieved his biggest win in 2011. He won the Masters Tournament, one of golf's four major championships. He was the third South African to win the Masters, following Gary Player and Trevor Immelman. His victory came exactly 50 years after Gary Player became the first international Masters champion.
In the final round, Charl started four strokes behind the leader. But he played an amazing round of 66. He started with a birdie on the first hole and an eagle on the third hole. An eagle means he got the ball in the hole in two shots on a par-5 hole! He then made history by getting four birdies in a row on the last four holes. This had never happened before in the Masters' 75-year history. This incredible finish helped him win the famous Green Jacket. After this win, Charl moved up to 11th in the world golf rankings.
Career After the Masters
After his Masters win, Charl continued to play well in other major championships in 2011. He had his best finishes ever at the U.S. Open (tied for ninth) and the PGA Championship (tied for 12th). He also played well at The Open Championship.
In December 2012, Charl won the Thailand Golf Championship. This was his first win since the Masters. He won by a huge margin of eleven strokes. The very next week, he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa again. He won this tournament by twelve strokes, which is one of the biggest winning margins in European Tour history. He won the Alfred Dunhill Championship again in 2013 and 2015.
In March 2016, Charl won his second PGA Tour event, the Valspar Championship. He won in a sudden-death playoff.
In May 2022, Charl announced he would play in the new LIV Golf tour. Because of this, he gave up his membership on the PGA Tour. On June 9, 2022, the PGA Tour suspended him and other players who joined LIV Golf. This means he can no longer play in PGA Tour events or the Presidents Cup.
In June 2022, Charl won the very first LIV Golf tournament, the LIV Golf Invitational London. He won by one stroke. His team, which included Hennie du Plessis, Branden Grace, and Louis Oosthuizen, also won the team part of the event.
