Charl Adriaan Schwartzel (born 31 August 1984) is a professional golfer from South Africa. He plays on the LIV Golf Invitational Series. Before that, he played on the PGA Tour, European Tour, and Sunshine Tour. He is famous for winning one major golf title, the Masters Tournament in 2011. His highest world ranking was number six in 2012.

Early Life and Amateur Golf

Charl Schwartzel was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. As a young golfer, he was very good. He won many amateur events in South Africa. He also won some international amateur events. These included the 2002 Indian Amateur and English Open Stroke Play Championships. He represented South Africa in the 2002 Eisenhower Trophy.

Becoming a Professional Golfer

Schwartzel became a professional golfer when he was 18 years old. He followed in the footsteps of many other top South African players. He quickly qualified for the European Tour. He was the second youngest South African to do this. He earned enough money to keep his spot on the European Tour in 2003 and 2004.

In 2005, he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship. This is a big tournament in South Africa. It is part of both the European Tour and the Sunshine Tour. He also finished first on the Sunshine Tour's Order of Merit. This means he was the top player on that tour. He continued to be the top player on the Sunshine Tour for three years in a row. In 2007, he won the Open de España in Spain. He moved into the top 40 golfers in the world. In 2008, he won the Madrid Masters.

After a year without wins in 2009, Schwartzel started 2010 strong. He won two tournaments in a row in South Africa. These wins helped him get back into the top 50 world rankings.

Winning the Masters Tournament

Charl Schwartzel won the Masters Tournament in 2011. This is one of the biggest golf tournaments in the world. He won by two strokes. He became the third South African to win the Masters. Gary Player and Trevor Immelman were the others. His win happened exactly 50 years after Gary Player's first Masters victory.

In the final round, Schwartzel started four strokes behind the leader. But he played an amazing round of 66. He started with a birdie on the first hole. Then he made an eagle on the third hole. An eagle is when you get the ball in the hole in two shots on a par-5 hole. This helped him catch up to the leader. He then made history by getting four birdies in a row on the last four holes. No one had ever done that before at the Masters. This incredible finish gave him the lead and the win. He earned the famous Green Jacket. After this win, he moved up to 11th in the world rankings.

Career After the Masters

After his Masters win, Schwartzel continued to play well. In 2011, he had his best finishes in the other major championships. He finished tied for ninth at the U.S. Open. He also finished tied for 12th at the PGA Championship.

In December 2012, Schwartzel won the Thailand Golf Championship. This was his first win since the Masters. He won by a huge margin of eleven strokes. The very next week, he won the Alfred Dunhill Championship again in South Africa. He won this tournament by twelve strokes, which was one of the biggest wins in European Tour history. He won the Alfred Dunhill Championship again in 2013 and 2015.

In March 2016, Schwartzel won his second PGA Tour event. This was the Valspar Championship. He won in a playoff against another golfer, Bill Haas.

Joining LIV Golf

In May 2022, it was announced that Schwartzel would play in the new LIV Golf tour. He then resigned his membership from the PGA Tour. In June 2022, the PGA Tour suspended him and other players who joined LIV Golf. Because he resigned, he can no longer play in PGA Tour events.

In June 2022, Charl Schwartzel won the very first LIV Golf tournament. It was called the LIV Golf Invitational London. He won by one stroke. His team also won the team part of the event.
